The Travelling Moai
In 2018 I travelled to Easter Island to create a series of light painting tutorials, which can be seen HERE. It was a remarkable experience. An image I saw of “the travelling Moai” at Ahu Tongariki was my inspiration for the trip. Of all the images I created on the journey, this one, the most simple, is my favourite. Simple light painting under a very bright moon.
This, like all of my images, is a single exposure. The scene is illuminated by moonlight.
There is quite the story around this image. The camera is perched over a stone wall stopping tourists entering the compound. There is a sleeping security guard just to the right of the scene. I stood for a long time contemplating jumping over briefly for the perfect angle. In the end I did the right thing, showed some respect to a group of people who have not had that luxury over time. I am looking forward to sharing the story.
